Why This Instant Pot Spaghetti Will Become Your New Favorite
This isn’t just another recipe; it’s an experience that brings joy back to weeknight dinners. Here’s why you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with Instant Pot Spaghetti:
- Unforgettable Flavor: If you cherish the classic taste of spaghetti with savory meat in a rich red sauce, this recipe is tailor-made for you. The pressure cooking method infuses the pasta and meat with deeper flavors from the sauce, creating a harmonious and utterly delicious result that tastes like it simmered for hours. Every bite is packed with that authentic Italian-American comfort food goodness.
- Remarkable Time Savings: The most striking advantage of this recipe is its efficiency. It dramatically cuts down preparation and cooking time compared to the traditional stovetop method, which typically requires boiling pasta in one pot and simmering sauce in another. With the Instant Pot, everything cooks together in a fraction of the time, allowing you to enjoy a homemade meal even on your busiest evenings.
- Endless Customization: This recipe serves as a fantastic base for your culinary creativity. Feel free to enhance it with your favorite toppings. A generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella or freshly grated Parmesan cheese adds an extra layer of creamy, salty goodness that elevates the dish. You can also experiment with different herbs, a dash of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick, or even a dollop of ricotta for added richness.
- Minimal Cleanup: One of the biggest perks of using an Instant Pot is the reduction in dirty dishes. Since the entire meal is prepared in a single pot, cleanup is incredibly quick and easy. No more scrubbing multiple pots and pans – just one pot to wash, freeing up more of your evening for relaxation.
- Perfectly Cooked Pasta: The Instant Pot excels at cooking pasta to perfection. The pressure environment ensures even cooking, resulting in tender yet firm spaghetti that avoids the pitfalls of being mushy or undercooked. You’ll achieve restaurant-quality pasta texture with minimal effort.
Essential Ingredients for Your Instant Pot Spaghetti
Ready to whip up this simple yet incredibly satisfying meal? Gather these fundamental ingredients, most of which you likely already have in your pantry:
- Spaghetti: The star of the show! Feel free to use any brand or type of spaghetti noodles you prefer. Whether you lean towards thin spaghetti for a delicate bite, thick spaghetti for more substance, or traditional spaghetti, the Instant Pot handles them all beautifully. Remember to break them in half for easier cooking and distribution in the pot.
- Jarred Pasta Sauce: Opt for your favorite store-bought pasta sauce. The quality of your sauce will significantly impact the overall flavor profile of the dish, so choose one you genuinely enjoy. Many brands offer a variety of options, from classic marinara to meat-infused sauces. If you’re feeling ambitious and prefer a homemade touch, consider trying a Homemade Italian Tomato Sauce recipe HERE for an even richer depth of flavor.
- Ground Beef: This ingredient adds a robust, hearty flavor and satisfying texture that pairs perfectly with the pasta and sauce. Using lean ground beef can minimize excess fat, but any type works well. Breaking it up into fine crumbles during sautéing ensures it blends seamlessly into the sauce.
Beyond these core components, you’ll also need a few pantry staples to round out the flavors and create a truly exceptional sauce. These include aromatic seasonings like garlic powder and onion powder, essential flavor enhancers like Italian seasoning, and basic pantry items such as salt, pepper, and a touch of sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes. A splash of olive oil for sautéing the beef is also crucial. And, of course, don’t forget the finishing touch: freshly grated Parmesan cheese for serving.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Spaghetti
Can I use different pasta noodles for this recipe?
Absolutely! While spaghetti is the classic choice, you’re not limited to it. Feel free to experiment with other pasta shapes like fettuccine, linguine, or even angel hair pasta. These alternatives can offer a different texture and mouthfeel to your dish. However, it’s crucial to consider that the cooking time may vary slightly based on the thickness and overall size of the pasta you choose. Thinner pasta types like angel hair will require less cooking time, while thicker shapes might need a minute or two longer. Always refer to the package instructions for conventional cooking times and then typically halve that time for Instant Pot pressure cooking, adding an extra minute for al dente results. You may also need to adjust the liquid slightly to ensure proper cooking.
Can I use a different type of meat instead of ground beef?
Yes, this recipe is incredibly versatile when it comes to meat choices. If ground beef isn’t your preference or you simply don’t have it on hand, there are several delicious alternatives. Ground turkey is an excellent leaner option that still provides a hearty texture. Ground Italian sausage, either mild or spicy, is another fantastic choice that will infuse your spaghetti sauce with a wonderfully rich and aromatic flavor. You could even use a combination of different ground meats for a more complex taste. For a meatless option, consider using lentils or a plant-based ground “meat” alternative, adjusting cooking times as needed.
What type of sauce should I use for this meal?
The best sauce for this Instant Pot Spaghetti is unequivocally your favorite brand. Using a sauce you already love guarantees that you’ll enjoy the meal even more. It truly doesn’t matter if it’s a premium brand name or a more budget-friendly generic bottle of sauce. The only thing that truly matters is your personal preference. Whether it’s a robust marinara, a sweet basil, or a spicy arrabbiata, choose what tantalizes your taste buds. For those who enjoy making things from scratch, our Homemade Italian Tomato Sauce Recipe HERE offers a fantastic alternative that provides a fresh, authentic flavor. Just remember, a great sauce is the foundation of great spaghetti!
Can I add different seasonings to this dish?
Absolutely! Customizing the seasoning is one of the joys of cooking. You can certainly use a blend of your favorite spices and herbs to enhance the taste of your Instant Pot Spaghetti. Italian seasoning is a classic, but don’t hesitate to add dried oregano, basil, thyme, or even a bay leaf during the cooking process. For those who appreciate a bit of heat, feel free to sprinkle some red chili pepper flakes into the sauce. Start with a small amount and add more to your liking, creating a dish with just the right amount of kick. Fresh herbs like parsley or basil, stirred in after cooking, can also brighten the flavors beautifully. Don’t be afraid to experiment and make this recipe truly your own!
What about adding vegetables?
Adding vegetables is a fantastic way to boost the nutritional value and flavor of your Instant Pot Spaghetti. You can sauté finely diced carrots, celery, and bell peppers along with the ground beef to create a classic mirepoix base. Mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach can also be stirred in with the sauce before pressure cooking. For softer vegetables like spinach, you might want to stir them in after the pressure cooking cycle is complete, using the residual heat to wilt them perfectly.
Can I double the recipe?
Yes, you can often double Instant Pot recipes, but be mindful of your Instant Pot’s capacity. Ensure that the total volume of ingredients does not exceed the maximum fill line (usually 2/3 full for regular cooking, 1/2 for foamy foods). The cooking time under pressure usually remains the same, but the time it takes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure will be longer due to the increased volume of liquid.
What to Serve with Your Perfect Instant Pot Spaghetti
A delicious spaghetti dinner is always better when accompanied by complementary side dishes that enhance the overall meal. Here are some fantastic options:
- Garlic Bread: You can never go wrong with warm, crusty garlic bread. It’s perfect for soaking up every last drop of that rich spaghetti sauce. You can easily purchase frozen Texas Toast garlic bread from the store, or for a homemade touch, spread softened butter mixed with minced garlic and a sprinkle of parsley on slices of Italian or French bread, then toast until golden.
- Garlic Knots: Another delightful bread option, garlic knots are soft, chewy, and bursting with garlic flavor. They’re incredibly easy to dip into the savory spaghetti sauce, making them a fun and flavorful addition to your meal. Many bakeries and grocery stores offer fresh or frozen garlic knots that simply need to be warmed.
- Fresh Side Salad: To add a refreshing contrast to the hearty spaghetti, a crisp side salad is always a welcome companion. You can opt for a convenient bagged salad mix or assemble your own. Combine fresh romaine and iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots, juicy cherry tomatoes, a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, and crunchy croutons. Dress it with a light vinaigrette to cleanse the palate between bites of rich pasta.
- Steamed Green Beans or Broccoli: For a simple, healthy green vegetable, quickly steam some green beans or broccoli florets. A squeeze of lemon juice and a dash of salt and pepper are all they need to be a perfect accompaniment.

Instant Pot Spaghetti
Ingredients
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes (not including pressure build up and release)
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serving Size: 4
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 – 24 ounce cans of pasta sauce spaghetti sauces Or use my homemade recipe linked below
- 1 – 14.5 ounce can of diced or crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 2 cups of water
- 16 ounces of spaghetti noodles 1 lb
- Optional Garnish: parmesan cheese
Instructions
-
Pour spaghetti sauce, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and sugar into a large bowl and combine thoroughly. Set this flavorful mixture aside.
-
Add the olive oil to your Instant Pot and select the ‘Sauté’ function. Once hot, add the ground beef, breaking it up with a hard spatula or wooden spoon as it browns. Continue cooking until the beef is completely browned, ensuring no large chunks remain. Turn off the ‘Sauté’ function.
-
Carefully drain any excess fat from the pot, leaving behind the browned ground beef.
-
Thoroughly scrape the bottom of the Instant Pot with a wooden spoon to dislodge any browned bits. This crucial step prevents the “BURN” notice when pressure cooking.
-
Pour 2 cups of water over the cooked ground beef in the Instant Pot.
-
Break handfuls of the spaghetti noodles in half and carefully arrange them on top of the water. Criss-cross and spread out the noodles to prevent them from clumping together during cooking.
-
Gently spoon the reserved spaghetti sauce mixture over the noodles, ensuring they are completely covered. We want liquid both above and below the spaghetti for even cooking. Lightly press any uncovered spaghetti strands down into the sauce.
-
Do not stir the contents of the pot at this stage. The sugar from the sauce needs to remain on top to prevent it from caramelizing and potentially burning at the bottom of the pot during pressure cooking.
-
Securely seal the pressure cooker lid, ensuring the vent is in the ‘Sealing’ position. Set the Instant Pot to cook on ‘High Pressure’ for 8 minutes.
-
Once the cooking time is complete, perform a ‘Quick Release’ of the pressure by carefully turning the venting knob to the ‘Venting’ position. Stand clear of the steam as it releases.
-
When the pressure has fully released and the float valve drops, carefully open the lid. Give the spaghetti a thorough stir to mix all the ingredients, ensuring the sauce and meat are evenly distributed with the pasta. Leave the lid off and allow the spaghetti to rest for a few minutes before serving; this allows the sauce to thicken to the perfect consistency.
-
Serve hot, topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese if desired, for an extra burst of flavor.
-
ENJOY your effortless and delicious Instant Pot Spaghetti!
